About

Trolltunga Winter Hike takes you to one of Norway’s most iconic rock formations in its winter setting. With snow-covered mountains, quiet plateaus, and fewer people in the landscape, you get to experience Trolltunga in a completely different way than during the summer season.

The hike starts at Trolltunga Active Base in Skjeggedal, where you meet your guide and the rest of the group. After information about the hike, the weather, and a check to make sure everyone is well prepared, the journey continues towards Mågelitopp. Along the way, crampons or snowshoes may be used if the conditions require it.

From Mågelitopp, the hike continues through the winter landscape towards Trolltunga. The route includes both steep sections and easier terrain, with views of snow-covered mountains, Ringedalen, steep mountainsides, and frozen waterfalls. The guides share knowledge about local nature and history along the way, and are happy to help you find the best photo spots.

Once you reach Trolltunga, one of the great highlights of the hike awaits - the rock formation itself in its winter setting, with Lake Ringedalsvatnet below and Folgefonna in the distance. On days with a lot of ice, it may not be safe to walk all the way out onto the rock ledge itself, but the guides will then make sure you get alternative photo spots and a full-value nature experience.

The return is often easier, with more downhill sections and good snow tracks. When conditions allow, the final section from P3 to P2 is done by snowracer - a fun and different way to end a long day in the mountains.

Trolltunga Active has been arranging guided winter hikes to Trolltunga since 2015. Their experienced guides have great respect for the winter mountains, with a strong focus on safe travel, proper equipment, and knowledge of weather and conditions.

This is a demanding but spectacular winter experience for those who are in good physical shape and want an active winter day in the unique landscape that Hardanger has to offer.
