1) Hiking to Trolltunga:
Duration: The return hike takes 10-12 hours
Length: About 11 km (7 miles) one way, the ascent is about 900 meters (2,900 ft.).
Season: 15th June – 15th September (every year is different).
There is a marked hiking trail from the parking lot in Skjeggedal to Trolltunga. Along the trail there are signs showing the remaining distance to Trolltunga. When starting in Skjeggedal there is a steep ascent up to Mågelitopp. (The funicular Mågelibana is no longer in operation). Then relatively flat before a new ascent after 2.5 km. Undulating terrain after 4 km until reaching Trolltunga.
The hiking trail is in the high mountains, and requires good physical condition. Plan well and start the hike early in the day. Prepare well in advance. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended, bring warm and waterproof clothing, food, water, a map and compass. Check the weather forecast for the area. Bring a tent if you plan to stay overnight. The Norwegian Trekking Association’s cabin «Reinaskorsbu» near Trolltunga was closed in 2013.
2) «Himmelstigen» to Trolltunga:
This is a guided biking, hiking and via ferrata climbing tour to Trolltunga. It starts with a 7 km bike ride along Lake Ringedalsvatnet. Then there is a hike along dry riverbeds. The last part is a via ferrata climbing route straight up to the plateau near Trolltunga. Return route is the same way. See video from this tour further down on this page. Travel and parking
Drive to Tyssedal from Odda on route 13. Follow signs to Skjeggedal. After about 7 km you reach the parking place in Skjeggedal. Parking in Skjeggedal and Tyssedal, parking in Skjeggedal (NOK 200/day) and at Tyssohallen (NOK 100/day). The parking fee is used to finance public goods in the area.
